This one is a good picture of what a full clearing job actually looks like, start to finish. A four-acre piece of ground in Ancram that had been let go long enough that it was on its way back to woods: goldenrod and brush over your head, saplings coming up through it, and twenty-eight trees standing in the way of ever using it again.

What the owner wanted
Open ground again. Something that could be mowed, kept as pasture, or cut for hay, and a clear line of sight across the property instead of a wall of brush. Not a lawn, not a building lot yet, just a field that behaves like a field.
What we did
The trees came down first, twenty-eight of them, and the stumps came out with the roots instead of being ground off at the surface. That part matters more than it looks. A ground stump leaves the whole root ball in the dirt to rot, sink and sprout for years; a grubbed one leaves ground you can mow and grade right away. Then the brush hog went over all four acres, and the wood and brush that were not staying got hauled off.

Start to finish it was a couple of days on site. The machine was already working in the area, so there was no waiting on a delivery, and the owner had the field back before the week was out.

Why it was worth doing now
Late summer and fall are the honest window for this kind of work. The ground is dry enough to carry a machine without tearing it up, the growth has stopped for the year, and whatever comes back in spring comes back as grass instead of brush. Wait another two seasons and those saplings are trees, and the job gets bigger and more expensive with every year it sits.

What the owner said
“He showed up when he said he would, the work was done in a couple of days, and the place looks completely different. Fair price, easy to deal with, and he left the site clean.” — Abe M., Ancram, from his Google review

This is the kind of work our land clearing page covers, and if the trees are the whole job, tree removal and hauling walks through that on its own. For what an overgrown field takes to bring back, see clearing a field for pasture.
