One of the first questions we hear from homeowners across Dutchess and Columbia County is simple: what does a new driveway actually cost? The honest answer is that no two driveways are priced exactly alike — but there are real starting numbers to work from, and a handful of things that move the price up or down. Here’s how driveway pricing works in our corner of the Hudson Valley.

What a new gravel driveway starts at
For a straightforward gravel driveway — built the right way on a compacted crushed-stone base with proper grading — pricing in Dutchess and Columbia County generally starts around $3,500. That covers the parts that make a driveway last: clearing and shaping the path, a solid stone base, and a finished surface that sheds water instead of washing out. Larger, longer, or more involved driveways go up from there, which is why we quote every project after a quick look at your property rather than giving a one-size-fits-all price.
What affects the price of your driveway
A handful of things decide where your driveway lands:
- Size — length and width are the biggest factor; more square footage means more base and more stone.
- Base depth — a proper 4–6″ compacted base costs a little more up front, but it’s the difference between a driveway that lasts years and one that ruts out by spring.
- Drainage — culverts, ditching, or a French drain where water tends to sit.
- Material — basic round gravel versus angular crushed stone (more on that below).
- Site prep — clearing brush, pulling stumps, or tearing out an old failed driveway.
- Slope & access — steep grades or tight, hard-to-reach spots take more time and equipment.
Gravel vs. crushed stone — which holds up?
Loose, round “pea” gravel looks nice but tends to scatter and migrate. Angular crushed stone — usually crusher run topped with a decorative stone — locks together, sheds water, and stands up to plowing and Hudson Valley freeze-thaw winters. For most driveways around here, that’s what we recommend.
Why the base is the part you can’t skip
The cheapest driveway is the one you only have to build once. A thin layer of stone dumped on bare dirt looks fine in July and turns to ruts and mud by April. We build on a compacted, well-graded base so your driveway drains properly and stays put season after season — it’s the single biggest reason a driveway lasts.
