EQUESTRIAN · RIDING ARENAS
A riding arena is only as good as what’s under the footing. Oakley Builders & Excavation builds laser-graded arena bases, drainage that survives Hudson Valley mud season, and paddock & arena fencing — serving Millbrook hunt country, Pine Plains, and all of Columbia & northern Dutchess County. Family-owned, fully insured, 5.0 stars on Google.
Anyone can spread sand. What makes an arena ride well for decades is the ground work underneath: a properly stripped and compacted subgrade, a laser-graded stone base with the right crown, and drainage that moves water away before it ever softens your footing. That’s excavation work — and it’s exactly what we do every day.
We build new outdoor arenas and rehab existing rings across Millbrook hunt country and the horse farms of Columbia & northern Dutchess County. Whether you ride dressage, hunters and jumpers, or western, the ground work is the same: get the base and the water right, and your footing stays consistent through April mud and August dust.

Call or Text (845) 459-3859 for a Free Site Walk
Thinking about a new arena, or fighting a wet ring every spring? Call or text Travis at 845-459-3859 and we’ll walk your site together — honest advice on siting, base, and drainage, and a free, accurate quote after the visit.
Q: How much does it cost to build an outdoor riding arena in the Hudson Valley?
A: It depends on your site — how much grading the land needs, arena size, materials, and the footing you choose. Rather than quote a number sight unseen, we walk your property and give you a free, accurate quote broken into site work, base, and drainage so you can see exactly where the money goes.
Q: What size should a riding arena be?
A: A standard dressage arena is 20×60 meters (about 66’×198′), a small dressage court is 20×40m, and most jumping rings run around 100’×200′. We’ll size it to your discipline, your horses, and your land.
Q: My existing arena holds water. Do I need a full rebuild?
A: Often, no. Many wet rings are fixed with regrading, re-crowning, and perimeter drainage. We’ll tell you honestly whether a rehab or a rebuild makes more sense — the site walk is free either way.
Q: Do you install the footing too?
A: We build the base and drainage — the part that determines how your arena rides — and we place the sand or footing blend you and your trainer specify. If you want a specialty performance footing, we’ll coordinate with your supplier so the base is built exactly to their spec.
Q: When is the best time to build an arena in New York?
A: Late spring through fall, when the ground is workable and compaction is reliable. Book a site walk early — siting and design decisions are best made before the season gets busy.
Q: Do you build fencing too?
A: Yes. We install and replace paddock and arena fencing — post-and-board, mesh, and gates — with posts set by our excavator-mounted auger, so lines stay straight and solid even on rolling ground. Fencing can be part of an arena project or a stand-alone job.

Every arena starts with a free site walk. We look at your land, your water, and your goals — then build the base and drainage your footing deserves, from Millbrook to Pine Plains and across Columbia & northern Dutchess County.
