LAND CLEARING · COLUMBIA COUNTY

Land Clearing in Hudson, NY

An old orchard or hayfield gone to brush, a wooded lot you want opened up for a house site, a hedgerow that has swallowed the fence line: that is most of the land clearing we do around Hudson. Oakley Builders & Excavation is family-owned in Pine Plains, fully insured, rated 5.0 stars on Google, and glad to walk the property with you and give you a free, accurate quote.

Land Clearing on Hudson-Area Properties

Most of the clearing we do around Hudson starts with ground that has been left alone too long: an orchard or hayfield gone to brush, a wooded lot that needs opening up for a house, a fence line swallowed by hedgerow. We clear it with the machine and pull the stumps and roots out instead of grinding them, so what is left is ground you can build on or mow, not a field of stumps waiting to rot.

Land Clearing Questions We Get in Hudson

Q: What does land clearing actually include?
A: Brush and briar removal, taking down small and large trees, grubbing out the stumps and roots, hedgerow and fence-line cleanup, brush hogging overgrown fields, and hauling the material off. If the ground needs to be graded and seeded afterward, we handle that too.

Q: Do I have to clear the whole lot?
A: No. Selective clearing is the more common request around Hudson – opening up a view toward the river or the Catskills, pushing a field edge back to where it used to be, or taking out the understory while leaving the mature trees standing. Tell us what you want kept and we work around it.

Q: Do you grind stumps?
A: No, and that is on purpose. Grinding leaves the root mass in the ground, where it settles and sprouts for years. We grub stumps out, roots and all, so the ground can be graded, seeded or built on without surprises. If all you need is one stump ground flush in a finished lawn, that is a different kind of job than the one we do.

Q: What happens to the trees and brush?
A: Depending on the site and what you want, the material gets stacked for firewood, piled for you to deal with later, or hauled off. We go over the options when we walk the property.

Q: How much will it cost?
A: Every lot is different – size, slope, tree size, access, and how much material has to leave the property all change the number, so we do not publish a flat price. Text photos and the address to 845-459-3859 and we will come back with an honest range within 24 hours. The firm number comes after a site visit.

Q: Are you insured?
A: Yes. Oakley Builders & Excavation is fully insured, and we are happy to provide a certificate of insurance.

Q: How soon can someone come look at it?
A: On-site estimates happen on Fridays, once the project details are in. Send photos and the property address and we will get you on the schedule.

Two excavators clearing and prepping a building lot in the Hudson Valley, NY

Our land clearing work includes:

Hudson is the county seat of Columbia County, and the land changes fast once you leave the city grid. Out toward Greenport and Claverack you get old farm ground and orchard rows that have not been worked in years, with red cedar, sumac and multiflora rose closing in from the edges. South of the city the ground climbs and gets rockier and more wooded, with mature oak, hickory and maple that are usually worth keeping and an understory of honeysuckle and wild grape that usually is not. Down on the river flats and along the creek bottoms the soil is heavier and stays wet well into spring, which changes when we can get equipment on it and how we plan the work.

So the first thing we do is walk the property with you. We talk about what stays – the specimen trees, a stone wall, the hedgerow you want left for privacy from the road – and what goes. Then we clear: brush and briars, saplings, standing trees, and the stumps. We do not grind stumps or run a forestry mulcher, because grinding leaves the roots in the ground and mulching leaves the stumps, and if that ground is going to be lawn, pasture, a driveway or a building site, you want them out. We grub them, roots and all, and the material gets stacked for firewood, piled for you, or hauled off, whichever you would rather.

If the cleared ground is going to be used for something, the clearing is only the first pass. We grade it, deal with the drainage the overgrowth was hiding, bring in topsoil where it is thin, and seed and straw it so it does not wash out. The full range of that work is on our land clearing services page, and if there are trees coming down as part of it, our tree felling and hauling page covers that end of the job.

We work throughout Columbia County and northern Dutchess – Hudson, Greenport, Claverack, Stockport, Livingston, Ghent, Germantown and the towns around them. Hudson is a regular trip for us from Pine Plains. Whatever the lot looks like right now, we will come see it and give you a straight, free quote.
