Trenching is the process of digging narrow, deep channels in the ground to install or repair underground utilities and services. Here’s what we handle:
Utility trenching isn’t just about digging a ditch. The trench needs to be the right depth (New York codes require specific depths for different utilities), the right width, and properly backfilled to protect the pipes or conduit inside. Incorrect trenching can lead to:
Step 1: Free Ballpark By Text — Send photos and the property address for a range within 24 hours. When a site visit is needed it happens on a Friday: we assess your property, discuss the utility route, and identify any existing underground utilities. Before we dig, we always call 811 (Dig Safely New York) to have underground utilities marked. You get a clear, written estimate.
Step 2: Utility Marking — We coordinate with Dig Safely New York to have all existing underground utilities marked. This protects existing water, gas, electric, and communication lines.
Step 3: Trenching — We excavate the trench to the required depth and width using trenchers and mini-excavators. We maintain proper grade for gravity-fed lines like drainage and sewer.
Step 4: Bedding & Installation — We lay sand or gravel bedding in the trench bottom, position the utility pipe or conduit, and ensure proper connections.
Step 5: Backfill & Compaction — We carefully backfill the trench in layers, compacting as we go to prevent settling. The surface is restored as close to original condition as possible.
Our trenching and utility services are available throughout Dutchess County (Pine Plains, Red Hook, Rhinebeck, Hyde Park, La Grange, Beekman, Pleasant Valley, Millbrook, Amenia, Millerton, Stanfordville, Dover Plains, Poughkeepsie, Staatsburg, Tivoli, Ancram), Columbia County (Hudson, Claverack, Kinderhook, Chatham, Germantown, Ghent, Copake, Valatie, Niverville, Hillsdale, Livingston, Stockport, Stuyvesant, Clermont, Austerlitz, Canaan, New Lebanon, Greenport, Philmont, Stottville).

Q: How much does trenching cost in Columbia County & northern Dutchess County?
A: Trenching costs depend on the length of the trench, depth required, soil conditions, and what’s being installed. Rock and wet ground move the number more than length does, so it’s worth pricing on your ground instead of an average. Text photos and the address to (845) 459-3859, or call, and you’ll have a free ballpark within 24 hours – then a firm price in writing after a site visit.
Q: How deep does a water line need to be buried in New York?
A: In our area of New York, water lines typically need to be buried at least 4 feet deep (below the frost line) to prevent freezing in winter. We always meet or exceed code requirements.
Q: Do you install the utilities too, or just dig the trench?
A: We specialize in the excavation and trenching portion. For the actual utility hookup (plumbing, electrical), we coordinate with your qualified plumber or electrician. We can also recommend trusted professionals in the area.
Q: What if there are existing utilities where I need to dig?
A: Before any trenching work, we call 811 (Dig Safely New York) to have all existing underground utilities marked. We then plan the trench route to avoid conflicts. If we need to cross existing utilities, we hand-dig those sections for safety.
Q: Can you trench through rocky ground?
A: Yes. Columbia County and northern Dutchess County have some very rocky terrain. We have the equipment and experience to trench through rocky soil, though it may take longer and cost more than soft soil. We’ll assess the soil during our free site visit. Call (845) 459-3859.

Safety and compliance are prioritized on every trenching project.
