If your yard turns into a swamp every time it rains, you are not alone. Drainage problems are one of the most common issues homeowners deal with, especially in the spring when snow melts and heavy rain picks up. Standing water in your yard is more than just an eyesore. It can damage your foundation, kill your lawn, and create a breeding ground for mosquitoes.
The good news is that most drainage problems can be fixed with the right excavation work. Here is how to tell if you have a problem and what you can do about it.
Water Pooling in Your Yard After Rain
If water sits in your yard for more than 24 hours after a rainstorm, that is a clear sign your yard is not draining properly. This usually happens when the ground is too flat or when the soil is compacted and cannot absorb water. You might also notice that certain spots in your lawn are always soft or mushy, even days after the last rain.
The fix for this is usually regrading. A professional excavation company can reshape the slope of your yard so water flows away from your home instead of sitting in low spots. The general rule is that the ground should slope down about two to three inches for every ten feet away from your house.
Water in Your Basement or Crawl Space
If you are finding water in your basement after storms, the problem is almost always outside, not inside. Water is pooling near your foundation and finding its way in through cracks or seams. This can lead to mold, structural damage, and expensive repairs if you ignore it.
The most effective solution is installing a French drain around the outside of your home. This is a trench filled with gravel and a perforated pipe that catches water before it reaches your foundation and redirects it away from the house. Combined with proper grading, a French drain can completely eliminate basement water problems.
Your Driveway Washes Out or Gets Ruts
Gravel driveways take a beating in the spring. If your driveway has deep ruts, potholes, or loose gravel washing to the sides, it is a drainage issue. Water is running down the driveway instead of being directed off to the sides.
Fixing this requires regrading the driveway with proper crown and drainage. A well-built gravel driveway should be slightly higher in the center so water runs off to both sides. Adding ditches or a culvert at the end of the driveway keeps water from pooling at the road.

Soggy or Spongy Areas That Never Dry Out
Some yards have spots that stay wet no matter what. These are usually low areas where water collects, or places where underground water is close to the surface. You might notice the grass is greener in that one spot, which actually means water is sitting just below the surface and fertilizing the roots.
The solution depends on the cause. Sometimes regrading the area is enough. Other times a French drain or catch basin is needed to collect the water and pipe it to a better location. In severe cases, a dry well can be installed underground to absorb excess water and slowly release it into the surrounding soil.
Erosion Along Your Property
If you see bare soil, washed-out channels, or mini gullies forming in your yard, that is erosion caused by uncontrolled water flow. This is especially common on sloped properties or yards next to wooded areas where runoff picks up speed.
Erosion will only get worse over time. The fix usually involves regrading the slope, installing drainage channels, and sometimes adding a retaining wall or riprap to slow the water down. Catching erosion early saves money because the longer you wait, the more soil you lose and the bigger the repair gets.
